Fabian Oefner

Dear Friends,

At first glance, the explosive images by Swiss photographer Fabian Oefner may appear to be a technical blueprint of iconic cars, however a closer look offers a fascinating story of creativity.

“What you see in these images is a moment that never existed in real life,” says Oefner. “What looks like a car falling apart is in fact a moment in time that has been created artificially by blending over 2,000 individual images together.”

Intrigued? Take a peek at our latest photographic exhibit “Disintegrating II” by the noted artist, which consists of a series of five large-format prints featuring iconic cars with a captivating spin. Oefner is no stranger to the M.A.D.Gallery, as we also exhibited his original series “Disintegrating” in 2013. An artist known for his creativity in melding science and art to capture natural phenomena, Oefner utilizes varied mediums including sound waves, magnetic Ferro fluids, and centripetal forces (see below).

Each image from the “Disintegrating II” collection presents a scale-model car, which has been completely deconstructed and exploded. The images are likely to be equally as visually appealing to mechanical aficionados, automotive enthusiasts, and admirers of visual art. The photographs feature some of the most legendary collector cars that have ever existed, including the 1969 Ford GT40, 1982 Porsche 956, Bugatti 57 SC, V-16 Auto Union Type C, and a 1957 Maserati 250F grand prix car.

Behind the scene, the creative process for these remarkable images requires more than two months of work, beginning with a sketch to create a visual map of the exploding car. Next, piece by piece each component is placed on a string and precisely guided by a needle into position. Oefner then individually photographs the miniature items and takes extra measures to create perfect lighting.

This unique artistic process results in more than 2,000 photos of minuscule components, which are merged and blended together in post-production to create the final visual.

“These are possibly the ‘slowest high-speed’ images ever captured,” says Oefner. From the meticulous creative process to the mechanical focus of the images, Oefner truly embodies the MB&F M.A.D.Gallery’s love for creativity and, of course, mechanical excellence.

If you are interested in one of Oefner's “Disintegrating II” prints, I do advise you to act quickly as the exhibition has already been a big success and there are not very many copies of this distinctive limited edition remaining. A “Disintegrating II” print might be the perfect Christmas present for the car aficionado in your life.

Don’t hesitate to drop in and see this series of art for yourself. And if Geneva is not part of your travel plans anytime soon, you can keep in touch via our Twitter, Facebook and Instagram (@mbfmadgallery).
