LEBRU × SILBERSTEIN

Philippe Lebru launches a series of unprecedented collaborations beginning with the watch designer Alain Silberstein and the “KB2” clock

In 2021, Philippe Lebru and Alain Silberstein joined forces to launch the “KB2” clock (short for Kontwaz Bauhaus 2); a fun, refreshing co-creation. Its dial and hands play on primary colours and geometrical shapes, sufficient on their own to assert the inimitable style that brought Alain Silberstein his international success.

Kinetic Design

Inspired by the iconic Pop Up, it is equipped with the famous UTINAM movement designed by Philippe Lebru, who received the Grand Prix at the Lépine competition of Paris, as well as a Gold Medal in clockmaking at the Geneva International Exhibition of Inventions in 2005.

The “KB2” comes from Besançon in Franche-Comté (France), in the Franco-Swiss territory of which the mechanical watchmaking and mechanical art heritage was registered in 2020 as intangible cultural heritage by UNESCO.

Fully developed and crafted by the UTINAM manufacture, at the heart of the French watchmaking capital, this distinguished contemporary clock is one of the foremost standard-bearers for this prestigious international label. Historic.

sea urchin & ALGAE

A series of kinetic sculptures created by Lluís Carulla Ruíz, an artist who lives and works in Barcelona.

In the Sea Urchin and Algae collections shown at M.A.D Gallery, Lluís is inspired by sea creatures and plants. He uses a technique developed with two-dimensional metal pieces, assembled in layers, which rotate around the same central axis, thanks to a precise system of bearings that is activated manually. The weight and inertia of the pieces generate a movement that lasts for 10 minutes, each with a bearing system attached to the different layers. His pieces are aesthetic, both when active and static.

Kinetic Design

The movements of Carulla's sculptures create visual sensations that affect the perception and senses. The oscillations slow down as the speed of the pieces decreases, and that is when a dance of superimposed forms and changes of direction begins, hypnotising spectators and drawing them into the organic movement produced by the sea currents. As they slow down, magic happens... As if we can subtly see how time stops with exquisite elegance.

These sculptures are designed to be played and interacted with; they invite you to experience their infinite movements. With the push of a hand, everything is activated, and the pieces come to life.

Kinetic Design

“With my sculptures I try to create harmony and beauty through shapes and colours. In the kinetic collections, I like my works to interact with the audience, to be played with, to be dynamic, living works that awaken the senses of those who watch them. They’re inspired by the rotary motions of the cosmos and universe, by the movements of sea creatures and plants" says the artist.

SOLSTICE CLOCK

Solstice is a kinetic clock created by the design studio Animaro. The studio was founded by Matt Gilbert and is based in East London. Solstice is a clock that turns the passing of time into a moving artwork: it gradually changes shape throughout the day, opening and closing like a flower.

Solstice is a moving clock that changes shape throughout the day. When the sun is at its highest in the sky (midday) the clock is at its largest, while in the evening (6pm) it is at its smallest. The clock presents an abstract expression of time.

Matthew Gilbert trained as an architect in Copenhagen, where he began experimenting with deployable structures and furniture. Since then, he has developed and honed this interest, culminating in the launch of his kinetic furniture brand Animaro in 2016. His designs have been shown in numerous exhibitions and published in various magazines worldwide.

Kinetic Design

He is inspired by old mechanical devices and instruments; in particular the playful generosity with which they convey their workings to an onlooker. He seeks to draw on this playfulness by creating clocks that change in unexpected ways with the passing of time.Time indication by linear movement of the marker over 24 hours

His work also plays with the idea of making visible, that which is not visible. What does time look like? What does gravity look like? These are a couple of the themes captured in his work to date. By visualising these constants in our lives, he seeks to encourage onlookers to appreciate the beauty of the world around them.

Sculpture of time A5-01

Designed and engineered in Switzerland by Around Five, Sculpture of Time A5-01 is a unique table clock that allows to experience Time differently

The adventure of Around Five begins with their sculpture of time, which changes according to time of day. It suggests a different way of measuring time, based upon the sun’s path and its curved outline which appears and vanishes behind the horizon.

The relentless scrolling of digital seconds is replaced here by a poetic and architectural time frame, encouraging encounters. The so to speak slow time of the clock, literally “analogical”, invites to contemplation and to enjoy the present moment.

NIXIE TIME ZONE CLOCK V2

Created to display the time in five different time zones sequentially, the Nixie Time Zone Clock V2 is a unique kinetic table clock that will make you travel around the globe. The time is displayed using genuine “Nixie” tubes (numerical indicators) made by hand in Germany in the 60s.

These gas-filled tubes have a lifespan of more than 20 years in standard operation and have become almost impossible to find today. Invented and designed in our studio in Lausanne, Switzerland, this table clock is entirely Swiss Made by the same workshops that manufacture components for the best Swiss watch brands. Kinetic Design

The Nixie Time Zone Clock V2 is made from the highest quality materials and machining technology. Pratically every component is processed more than just once, in the same machine, to obtain an incredible level of detail. Many of the components are finished by hand : the brushed and polished finishings or the orange enamel painted letters (similar to “cloisonné”), which requires utmost precision and skill.

Most of the components are treated in PVD (Physical Vapor Deposition) in three colors : light grey, dark grey and blue. PVD is a high-end coating used for luxury watch components, medical tools and aerospace technology. The body, which is milled from a solid aluminum cylinder, is anodized in a unique bronze grey color we specially formulated just for the clock.

SLOW DANCE

A Canvas to play, experiment and discover.

“Slow dance” is the first creation of Wonder Machines – a picture frame that makes real objects appear to move in slow motion. By taking advantage of the limits of human visual perception, this optical illusion sculpture appears to be doing the impossible — right before your eyes. Slow Dance combines technology, science, and art, in order to remind us of the natural mystery, beauty, and wonder that surround us every day.

Play and experiment! YOU bring the objects to Slow Dance — it is a blank canvas for you to compose.

From weeds on the street to flowers in the garden to bird feathers, each object will reveal a new slow motion world. It will change how you will see plants and other objects forever. Different modes allow you to cycle through different dance patterns, some slow and smooth, and others that make the object appear to jump through space.

INVERTED SPACE

Designed and engineered in Germany by inventor-artist Robert Spillner, “Inverted Space” is a spherical kinetic sculpture that beautifully delivers infinite flow patterns of metallic liquid.

Robert Spillner, born in Koblenz in the Rhineland region of south-western Germany, grew up with a fascination for mechanics, deeply felt already at an early childhood age. Consequently, Spillner found himself working for the automotive industry after graduating with degrees in engineering from the university of Cologne and Bochum. “All I desired was to solve mechanical problems and invent new things,” says Spillner of his life-long passion. One of his early inventions, a steering valve, had an F1 team contact him right out after his first employment: “Within a year, half of the F1 teams were using the valve that I had produced in the garage at home.”

For the past twenty years and while pursuing a successful career in automotive engineering, Spillner created many elaborate and yet minimalist kinetic objects, which can be found in collections across Europe, Asia and the USA. Following the original spark of fusing engineering with art, Spillner in his studio and workshop in Düsseldorf creates those innovative machines deeply inspired by the patterns and mechanisms of nature, a ‘Deus ex Machina’ of sorts, equipped with a wonderful sense of humour.

Spillner’s latest creation is “Inverted space” and it is more brilliant than ever. “I wanted to create an image which would change in time, but not a video. I had this intuition one night that I needed to use molecules instead of mechanical parts. The result is absolutely mind-blowing. What you see are rotating galaxies or images that resemble those taken by weather satellites, simply because of the physics behind it” reveals Spillner, “or maybe what you see is similar to the otherworldly energy behind meditation… Either way, “Inverted Space” is life in motion.”

ClockClock 24

Part kinetic sculpture, part functional timepiece, ClockClock 24 is produced and carefully assembled with true dedication in Humans since 1982’s workshop in Sweden.

Twenty-four clocks come together to tell a collective story in one singular digital display. Each individual clock hand is choreographed in line with the others, so that these clocks tell the time as a collective, rather than individually. The piece can be programmed in 12- or 24-hour time and has three different modes of movement between each minute: minimal, medium or elaborate.

ClockClock 24 combines a unique concept, technical precision and expert craftsmanship, resulting in the highest quality form. Each piece is produced and carefully assembled in Humans since 1982’s workshop in Stockholm, Sweden.

Humans since 1982 are Bastian Bischoff (b. 1982, Germany) and Per Emanuelsson (b. 1982, Sweden). Since meeting as postgraduate students at HDK Göteborg in 2008, the duo have produced works that defy easy categorisation, situated between visual art and product design. The Humans since 1982 studio is based in Stockholm, and now comprises a large group of specialists with different professional and cultural backgrounds.

FINGERS MKII

Fingers Mk III by Nik Ramage for Laikingland is a fantastic, impatiently-tapping mechanical replica of Ramage’s own hand.

At the flick of a switch, the realistic digits in distinctive dark black resin drum rhythmically, until the motor is turned off again. Ramage has been a good friend of Laikingland for many years, describing himself as “a mechanical sculptor who makes useless machines and invents contraptions that the world didn't know it needed”.

Based in both the UK and The Netherlands, Laikingland is a creative label that designs and manufactures beautifully crafted kinetic objects that engage, and evoke a sense of play and nostalgia.

swinging sticks

Swinging, flowing, noiselessly circling – never stopping. The swinging sticks seem to defy gravity, to turn logic on its head.

How can they endlessly swing without ever pausing? How can the sticks circle so fluidly that they create a relaxing, and almost hypnotic effect?

The Swinging Sticks generate an illusion - almost like perpetual motion - as the sticks turn and turn noiselessly and, it would seem, in contradiction to the laws of physics.

An electrical engineer and a designer have spent several years working on this phenomenon. Besides the technical challenge, an important aspect was the development of an aesthetic in a combination of metal and wood. The Swinging Sticks are a high-quality decorative object with sophisticated entertainment value. Individually hand-made in a precision process, each set of sticks is a unique item.
